The fact that they take a reservation is almost a five star itself....especially in Hilton Head. The dining area is decorated cute..however no water views. It's actually in a strip mall. We had chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, and peach cobbler. The food was excellent but I will say a bit on the heavy side. The south however is known for cooking with butter and cream, etc. You will definitely feel like you overate after leaving here. The drinks were amazing. I had blueberry lemon infused vodka. I may be butchering the name of the drink, however it was so good that I had more than one. I think it's just a bit far out to give it 5 stars.

I just had the best shrimp and grits ever. This is an excellent little restaurant just off of Hilton Head Island. The inside appearance far exceeds the exterior in this small hidden shopping center. I had absolutely nothing to disappoint my dining experience. Menu has many options and the wine list is excellent. Service was exceptional and the restaurant offers great values for early diners. I wish I could give 5+ stars.

I had eggplant polenta--delicious! M had chicken and waffles--multitude of flavors and an original take on chicken and waffles. Waitstaff was very well trained. She knew the menu well. Did not rush us with ordering or giving us the check. The decor was ok, but confusing. The chairs and tables were heavy oak. They looked like they belonged in a pizza joint instead of this delicious-smelling place. The music mix was odd as well--a mix of old and Classic rock. We would come back if we ever visit this area again.

Happy hour heaven! This was our second visit this summer, and we are happy we did. In early June we had dinner here, ahi tuna and shrimp/grits, and really enjoyed the meal. The bourbon pecan pie was a great finishing touch. Yesterday, we decided to meet some friends at the bar for happy hour, have a drink and appetizers, and then grab dinner somewhere (somewhere = our friends hate to try new places). By the time it was over, we had ordered at least one of each of the happy hour appetizers, while providing our own ranking of them in order. The house made chips with Gorgonzola and bacon won, but the oysters weren't far behind. Have you ever eaten a pulled pork sandwich on a krispy kreme donut? Seriously!?! Talk about evil on a plate! We each ate 1/2 and decided that we'd never do it again. It was delicious, but obamacare expressly forbids the consumption of them. Great beer and wine selection, and the wait staff was excellent. They saw that we were making our own entertainment, so were available but not hovering. We need to keep this place on our list. You can be really decadent here with your choices, or have a healthy meal that is top notch. Either way, try the chips, and spend the $1 on the bacon. :)

My husband and I were visiting family and heard good things about the food at HogsHead. I called the restaurant at 5:30pm to make reservation, only to be put on hold for 5 minutes. I hung up and called back 10 minutes later. When I asked to make a reservation, I was told that the hostess didn't show up and they needed to put me on hold. I hung up 2 minutes later. Despite not getting good customer service on the phone, we went to HogsHead at 8:45pm. We were sat upon arrival and given menus. A waiter came and filled our water glasses, but never came back. It appeared that he was the only waiter serving the 5 other tables in the restaurant. While I can appreciate the fact that he was busy, after more than 10 minutes of waiting and watching all other tables get service, we got up and left. We will not be giving this place another chance.

We came here for a big family dinner. I had the whole hog "Cuban Style" and it fell really short of the Cuban Sandwich. I figured a restaurant with the word "HogsHead" would have served something that blew my flavor settings through the roof, but it did not. The pork was nice but I had to pull the ham off and leave on the side of my plate. It was more like a piece of fat on my sandwich. I asked for more mustard and never got it while my meal was in front of me, I did get it after asking twice, but still had to wait. The fries were also all burnt and the size of half my pinky finger. I left hungry.

Holy foodgasm batman. Pretty unassuming place just over the bridge in bluffton. Kind of empty little business/strip mall thing. I think they are new but my tummy tells me that they'll be packed. Started with drinks. A dogfish 90 min IPA on draft for the hubs and spring "thyme" fizz cocktail for me. A sweet but herby kind of drink with citron and blueberry lemon soda and thyme. Very tasty. An app of marinated feta, olive tapenade, roasted corn and pita. Light, fresh. Warm pita. It didn't fill you up which is good. Just enough to whet the appetite. Hubby got the special of filet, Gorgonzola mashed potatoes, corn, brown butter Brussel sprouts and a Demi glacé. Holy cow. Hubby cleared the plate. And I had to restrain myself. The mashed potatoes were amazing. I got the all American burger with truffled fries. Om nom nom. Delicious party with pimento cheese oozing over it. And I'm not a huge pimento cheese fan but it was perfection. I couldn't eat the whole thing because I wanted dessert and to walk out under my own power and not be rolled out. And the fries!!! Truffled with pecorino. Yes. Yes. Yes. And finally....dessert. It was hard to decide. Hubs got the bourbon pecan pie. A single serve portion in a little cast iron skillet. Just the right amount of bourbon and right consistency. And vanilla ice cream. I got the Carolina peach cobbler. Sweet fancy Moses. Almost better than what I make. A cakey cobbler as opposed to rolled crust-which is the right way to do peach cobbler. And butter pecan ice cream. I ate it all. The bottom line? So with crossing the bridge from HHI. This place is going on the list of "must eat places" for our annual vacation to HHI.

Had an awesome dinner at HogsHead last week with the family. I saw some mentions of disappointment that there wasn't a water view. Although this is listed as Hilton Head, I would really say it was in Bluffton. Personally, I think Bluffton has more interesting restaurants to choose from these days than the island, but that's just me. Atmosphere is fantastic. It has a very rustic chic thing going on. Reservations are a must. So plan ahead. Food is great. I deducted a star because I liked my short ribs but I didn't LOVE my short ribs. I did, however, love the bite of chicken and waffles I ate off my sister's plate; the pear and goat cheese bite I stole off my mom's plate; the house-made pappardelle noodles from my brother's plate; and the side of roasted brussel sprouts I almost didn't want to share with the table. I'll be back. I went with wine drinkers but was dying to try their cocktails.

Flavor filled dishes are all over the menu at Truffles. From the coconut shrimp (we had the appetizer version) to the catch of the day, which was black drum fish, you really cant go wrong. As an fyi, they sell the butter they serve with the bread that they bring you after your order.

We were looking for a local special Place for lunch and found this place. What a find. My only complaint was that I wanted everything on the menu. The place was clean and as I said the menu selections were awesome. Great place!

We flew into Hilton Head and were a little early to check into our nearby hotel. We were hungry and stumbled into this wonderful little joint. It was around 1:45 and a few people were seated at tables but we opted to sit at the bar. The bartender (Ryan I believe) was great. He was very polite and knowledgeable, mixed a great drink for my fiancé and lead me to one of the best sandwiches I have had in a long time. I had the whole hog Cuban and I am afraid I will be dreaming about it for some time to come. Being from Louisiana, this is no small feat for a SC restaurant. Absolutely loved this place and would recommend to anyone in the area. Thank you Hogs Head for a great meal and memory!

Scallops, scallops, scallops... Best I've ever had. We were lucky enough to stumble into Hogshead after a very long day and even though we were the last group in the restaurant, the owners, Alexis and John, were incredibly warm and helpful. The wine selection was excellent, and the service was friendly and attentive. Hogshead is truly a treasure, and we felt like we were "regulars" on our first visit. Highly recommend!!!

I think the Bluffton/Hilton Head area is king of the strip mall killer restaurants. We stumbled upon Hogs Head Kitchen & Wine bar for lunch on Saturday, and boy what a find. Great cocktail, beer, wine, and whiskey list. The apps were great. Highly recommend the sweet potato creek chowder! Super good. As was the black bean soup. I had the Seared Ahi Sandwich and it was a 10! My wife had the whole hog pork cuban. It was really great too. Different, but had that SC BBQ twist on a classic sandwich. My parents tried the filet Philly Cheese steak. We didn't have anything bad. I'd go fries over potato salad, but if you like dill go for the potato salad. I loved it (I love dill), but my wife liked my fries way better. Can't wait to come back for dinner!

A jewel of a find near Tanger Outlet Mall. Great upscale feel with all wooden furniture. Food seems to be prepared by a chef rather than a cook. We had appetizer of fresh dries chips with goat cheese and bacon. Grilled Tuna Steak sandwich, Reuben Sandwich and Vegetable & Mozzarella Sandwich. What a meal. Only the man that had the vegetable sandwich finished his meal. Each if us has a deserts that were made from scratch and delicious. I highly recommend this place. We has lunch but I would definitely call ahead if I was heading there for dinner to ensure that a table is available.

When I come to visit, I make sure to stop by Hogs Head. The burgers here are pretty incredible. Cocktail drinks accompanied by sea salt potato chip appetizer (sour cream and cheese) are my fav. The ambience is pretty great when they have the small bands play at night. Love this place.

I chose wrong last night... Chicken&waffles well all I can say is skip it but my companions were very happy with shrimp and grits and swordfish special. I should have gotten one of the specials but still love the scallop app and the chips with Gorgonzola wow! Young woman waited the table was excellent.

I am so stoked that I picked this place to celebrate our Anniversary. The weather was nice and we decided to sit outside. Plus they had a few big fans going so it was extremely pleasant. Our server told us the specials. However, I had looked at the menu on line and thought I knew what I wanted to order. However, when my husband chose the crab cakes and I looked at what came with it I changed my mind. Let me start with the crab cakes. Oh my stars so good. Full of crab meat and very little filler. My husband gave me his spinach. The whipped yams were so yummy and the succotash with okra reminded me of my Mom's. Slap your tongue good. For dessert if you like chocolate order the Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate. Yes that is the NAME. Pot de creme, bouchon and mousse. All decadent and rich. Best part of our Anniversary. Guys if you want to take your wife for a special dinner or lunch this is the place.

Hogshead has been open for just about 2 years and all I can say is "yea." In an area packed with just so-so, rip off the tourist crap, this place is an oasis. Run by a James Beard award winner and his wife/girlfriend, I've never had a bad meal here, and instead, can point to a number of "bests." Best shrimp and grits, best shrimp curry, and the best appetizer (truffled mushroom) I've ever had. So many good things to say about this place - maybe only one other restaurant in the area reaches this level of professionalism and culinary umph! Go as soon as you can

A simply scrumptious meal with a totally delightful dining experience. If you area driving to HHI anytime this is a perfect place to stop before you hit the intercostal. If you want to adventure out for a meal - worth the trip. Just remember this is in the back of a shopping plaza and not that easy to find. You need to know they have a daily lunch deal for $8.75. A great price and they have a variety of options as well as soup and salad and 1/2 sandwich and sides, etc. This is not the reason we decided to try the place. The service and atmosphere were great. Scott started with the sweet potato "creek" chowder with shrimp, crab, andouille sausage. The dish had a nice smoky and sweet smell from the andouille and sweet potato. He then had the lunch special reuben on marble rye served with hand-cut fries and sea salt. My meal was perfect. The sea scallops & forest mushrooms served with lemon-pepper pappardelle, tomato, spinach, sweet peas in a porcini black pepper cream was decadent and wonderful. Every bite was perfect and the scallops were seared to perfection. Probably one of the best meals I've had in HHI and a great start to dining on the island in 2014.

Second visit with friends - it was amazing. The mushroom and truffle risotto was complete heaven. The salmon was perfect. When I ordered it well, the server knew enough to suggest that i get it med-rare to avoid overcooking. The dessert was pure perfection. I am in love with this new place! When the chef visited my table, every plate was clean and we were blown away by dessert. One word suggestion - GO!

This place is really good. the best steak! our son loved the fried oreos. nice atmosphere. Lunch specials are great too! We are locals and love to cook so it has to be really good before we will pay for it. We always look forward to eating here. It is worth every penny

The ambiance is great, nice tables, great light fixtures made from mason jars, very comfortable we started with 3 different cocktails and the potato chips with Gorgonzola and chives. So good. Mother had crab cakes and said they we fabulous, father had fish and liked the plate. Hubby had the polenta skillet which was wonderful and I had the steak special which was a huge perfectly cooked steak, with a mushroom risotto with some sort of marinated cherries, yum. I look forward to next time in town, so I can try their version if chicken and waffles, I bet they are fantastic.

So you don't have a rambling read, here it is, broken down: 1. We waited nearly 30 minutes for our meals to arrive. 2. After our drinks arrived our waitress NEVER came back to ask about them. 3. My Lemon Fizz drink described lemonade and I didn't expect it to be super sweet, regardless, the "thyme" listed in the beverage was dried out, old sprigs on top. The "lemon" described in the drink was literally wrinkled and DRIED out like it had been cut 2 days before. 4. Our children were served their chicken & waffles (very good BTW) first and the waitress turned right around after dropping them on the table and I had to call out to get her attention on the drinks served far earlier that were just sitting there untouched. 5. The waitress ARGUED with us about the drinks. Told us we were wrong, that's how they were supposed to taste. Did not apologize for the dried springs of thyme and poked at them and argued and I explained that they had been sitting in oil (from the scallops appetizer - pretty good) for over a half hour and would not admit the wrinkly lemon was old. 6. After complaining about the lack of checking on us AND the quality of the drinks AND she then argued with us, she did not offer another suggestion, bring the drink menu or ever apologize. 7. The Flounder meal said it contained olives. There was ONE olive. ONE. 8. The chicken and avocado caprese salad said its main ingredient was avocado. There was a small dollop on the plate. Not even slices, just a guacamole type splash. 9. My husband had to ask for the wine menu after the drink fiasco and after being given the drink menu, our waitress NEVER came back and asked what I'd like to drink or if anyone else wanted something else to drink or if anyone even wanted WATER REFILLS! 10. We were a party of 6, but 3 of which consisted of 3 children under the age of 6. Most times parties of 8 or more are automatically charged gratuity. Not 6. And children are almost never counted as part of this. Our children did not drop any food on the ground and they stayed at our table and used their manners. Yet we were automatically charged "a large party" 20% gratuity. After that level of BELOW SUBPAR service, I am disgusted we paid that woman who argued with us AND ignored us - $25!! Which was more than any of our meals. 11. The Crab Louie is not a crab Louie by any means but it was a tasty crab salad according to my MIL. 12. The fries were atrocious!! How do you mess up fries?? I was excited with all the herbs described. Wrong. Oil was not hot enough and they were not crisp by any means, tasted purely of oil and some Rosemary sprinkled was the big herb promise. Not to mention there was ZERO salt. Since she never came back to check on us till far after each service, we rummaged and looked behind the bar for salt. Where another server took pity on us and brought us salt. Still didn't help these oil soaked awful "gourmet" fries. If you have plenty of time, don't expect the meals to be exactly as described & like sweet mixed drinks and to be ignored at dinner - this is the place for you. My husband and I both consider ourselves decent chefs and we love to eat out and try new small restaurants. This is the worst we have encountered in over a year...my MIL & Great-Grandma live less than 3minutes away and we will still NEVER be back and will make sure to warn all our relatives and friends. (We went Monday the 22nd between 1720-1920.) BTW, we did not want to be at dinner for 2 hours & ate (when it finally arrived) and left. Wasn't even offered the dessert menu!

We chose this restaurant because of the 5 star rating, but it was the worst meal of our entire vacation. We waited 15 minutes for the waitress to take our drink order. Then another 40 min for our food. We ordered the crab cakes and could barely eat one of them. They came with whipped yams that were so sweet it was gross with the crab cake. We also ordered the scallops, shrimp and mussels and it was bland. And we ordered the scallops and the risotto. The scallops were good, but the risotto was bland. Definitely not 5 star worthy. We left the restaurant feeling sick. The band was way better than the food!!!

Bourbon and oysters followed by black bean soup and, um, bourbon, followed by Duvalley and med rare flank steak with truffle oil fries followed by, um, Eagle Rare, What great and friendly staff ..... what a great experience. Didn't do desert, no room, so can't talk to their sweets. I travel two weeks out of every month throughout the mid atlantic and southeast and this is the kind of place I live to find on the road. Excellent menu, wine list, top shelf booze, and just plain cool. Not really for single digit or immature (tastebud-wise) kids. Long and short: Thank you. Keep it up John and try those Apex irons!!! Cheers and "Be the Ball"!! McFly in VB

Really good. Sea salt potato chips with gorgonzola to start were fabulous, but really could have used some salt - none on the tables. Warning - it's a HUGE portion - would be nice if the menu so noted. I stopped after ~ 1/3 so I could eat my dinner, which was the ahi tuna burger. Truly seared rare, which was delicious with the toppings listed. Service was top notch. I really appreciated hearing the specials including the prices - other servers didn't do this and I was sorry to see it wasn't a consistent practice. Delicious drinks, great atmosphere. Looking forward to another visit.

We went here a couple of weeks ago on a rainy night. The downtown spot we had chosen was, sadly, no longer an option as most tables are outside. We called HogsHead because I'd been so excited to try it. They actually had a couple of open tables so we rushed over. Beautiful dining room. Comfortable and quiet enough that we could talk, but not so quiet that we could hear the folks at the next table. Waiter was VERY knowledgeable about drinks menu. I just really wanted a beer and he directed me to what is now my very favorite bitter ale - Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA. Not too floral with just the right bite of bitter. Yummy. A few of the specials sounded really good, particularly the mussels, but I ended up going with stuffed flounder. It was okay but a bit underseasoned. Regretted not getting the mussels. My son got the kid's fish and chips. PERFECTLY battered and fried. Crispy and chewy batter, moist and delicate fish . . . completely unseasoned and flavorless. So disappointing. My MIL got the special flank steak (a favorite in our family!). No steak knife and it was very tough (she didn't order it well cooked). It had such a heavy spice rub that it was bitter and almost inedible. She was too polite to say anything. My FIL and I both thought it was awful. My FIL got the Lemon Caper Chicken Sandwich. Again, terribly underseasoned. I don't know that we'll go back. The service was attentive without being overbearing. But the food, at least entrees, is not worthy of a repeat visit. We might give it one more shot for appetizers (housemade chips looked amazing!) and desserts (creme fraiche ice cream also looked good) but no more entrees for us there.

We had an amazing experience here. Totally unexpected as we stumbled across it after checking in late at the Hilton Garden Inn. Menu was excellent, wine list extensive, a perfect match of casual and chic. Owners have completely redone the place apparently and tables made out of old barn doors complete with hardware in the bar that can easily seat 8, is just a touch of class. This is a modern twist on American bistro cuisine NOT bbq. Hogs head is a reference to wine barrels. Make a special trip. Owners are great, present and friendly.

I love this place! Relaxed atmosphere, diverse menu. My favorite is the shrimp and grits, but I also loved the burger and the chicken and waffles. The staff makes you feel welcome, and will also welcome your "polite" dog to dine with you on the patio. G.M. Princeton Jct., NJ
